I am having a really hard time right now. I know things could be a lot worse, but right now, in the middle of it, it feels like things are really bad.
I am totally desperate for a job, or some lottery winnings. I am at the point where just hearing about people being busy with their jobs makes me incredibly jealous. I am craving that feeling that comes after a hard days work. I'm sure all you working people out there are like, "what is your problem! you have all this free time and you are complaining?"!! Yes, yes I am. Unemployment is not for me. It is hard enough that I have to try to find some meaning to my day, but now we are starting to worry about money. Because of me of course. My student loans are starting to send me ominous notes about how my payments are going to begin. And it is not pretty.
So now I have to decide what to do. I am assuming that if I wanted to get a job at Trader Joe's or Starbucks that would be possible. But then am I giving up on getting a job that actually utilizes the skills I've learned (and paid for) in the past 10 years? Another option is to only go back to pre law school and become a lab tech again but I feel like that would be harder to quit if I found something else. I'm thinking about selling my eggs but would anybody want eggs from an unemployed lawyer in serious debt?
I'm not really looking for sympathy, even though this is a pathetic post. I guess I'm just looking for advice and whining in a large forum.
What would you do?!? What should I do?

I would say go to Trader Joe's or Starbucks. Then you can focus on getting the job you really want and you'll definitely feel like you've worked all day.
Plus, if you happen to move somewhere, maybe westward, you can transfer easily. No worrying about getting a new job either way.
chin up chica! i totally agree with ben. go with something that you can leave easily.
and on the egg selling thing... steer clear of it. i've heard it's a pretty grueling process.
give me a call soon and we will chat...
You already know what I think! But I'm starting to think maybe you should work for me and I'll pay you to write my papers! How does that sound? :)
Def. keep your chin up. Times suck, but I have faith something great will come for you. But, I agree with Ben...anything might be better than nothing, and it's a plus you already worked at Starbucks in the past. Either of those would be interesting (plus yay discounts!). :)
thanks everybody! Hopefully TJ's is looking for peeps!
do you not want to get a job b/c you might leave boston soon? what is Frenchie's job situation? you should totally work at TJs!! That would be awesome! the people there rock and the discounts would kick ass!
does your school have an alumni network that could help find a job? what about the oberlin alumni network?
Emily! I totally feel for you. Job hunting is totally brutal. But remember, you WILL eventually get a job. You will not be unemployed forever. (This is my mantra I keep telling myself). I think the Starbucks/Trader Joes idea is a good one - some money, keep busy, easy to leave. Or work some holiday retail job (Crate and Barrel has a posting on its website for holiday/temp help) where you can get a discount and spread some holiday cheer. Love, Sarah O.
Oh, and if you really want to sell your eggs, I have a law school friend who did that in college and I could connect you two and you could talk to her about it. I think she was paid really well, but I doubt that would really help you feel productive and feel positive about job hunting. Love, Sarah O.
Em, I have a friend who went to law school, passed the bar, and then immediately got a waitressing job at this awesome beer/pizza place in Anchorage. She liked it so much (and got such great benefits) that she never quit. So, who needs those skills we learned in law school anyway?
Also, I am working two jobs and STILL can't pay all my own bills without help from my parents. And my boyfriend now buys my groceries. And I failed the bar exam.
So...um...since this was supposed to cheer you up, get a job at Starbucks (they actually have really kickass health insurance) and something will come along!
